GCB supports "Net Zero Carbon Events”

New initiative hosted by the Joint Meetings Industry Council

19.11.2021

The GCB German Convention Bureau is a partner of the "Net Zero Carbon Events" initiative, which brings together the international event industry and was initiated to jointly face and overcome the challenges of global climate change.

Aims of the initiative

Net Zero Carbon Events aims to link a wide range of stakeholders to:

  • Jointly communicate the event industry’s commitment to tackling climate change and driving towards net zero by 2050

  • Develop common methodologies for measuring the industry’s direct, indirect and supply chain greenhouse gas emissions

  • Construct an industry-wide roadmap towards net zero by 2050, and emissions reductions by 2030

  • Foster collaboration with suppliers and customers to ensure alignment and common approaches

  • Establish common mechanisms for reporting progress and sharing best practice

To this end, the initiative will develop a roadmap together with all supporters by the end of 2022. This roadmap is intended to provide companies in the event industry with a frame of action for their own individual agendas.

What does Net Zero mean?

Net Zero refers to a balance between man-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their removal from the atmosphere. To achieve this balance, GHG emissions must be reduced, and the non-avoided ones must be compensated or “neutralised” through the use of long-term carbon capture solutions. This goes beyond the carbon neutrality approach, which entails compensating the non-avoided emissions through the use of traditional offsets.

Initiative launched at COP26

Supported by the UNFCCC secretariat (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat) and hosted by the JMIC (Joint Meetings Industry Council), more than 100 stakeholders have mapped out the initiative’s commitment. On 10 November 2021, the project was officially launched first at COP26 in Glasgow and a few hours later at IMEX America in Las Vegas.

Meeting destination Germany as committed partner

The GCB German Convention Bureau e.V. is a committed partner of the initiative to show that Germany as a meeting destination acknowledges the challenge of global climate change and wants to work on solutions and new approaches. The GCB also aims to act as a multiplier, inviting all relevant players in Germany to make their own contribution in light of the challenges faced by global warming.
