However, it is also worth mentioning that the University of Stuttgart trains around 80 percent of German space engineers, is home to 80 percent of all research institutes in Baden-Württemberg and is also strong in production technology. Consequently, the Swabian city is heavily focused on transport + logistics and technology + innovation.

Automotive engineering / Electro-mobility

Today, the region where the automobile was born is still one of the world‘s leading automotive centers. Around the premium vehicle producers Daimler and Porsche, and also Bosch, the largest automotive supplier, a highly innovative mix of medium-sized ancillary industries and specialized service contractors has sprung up around premium vehicle producers and automotive suppliers.

Engineering

Traditionally, the engineering sector has played a leading role in the region‘s economy with an outstanding reputation in the manufacture of tools and special-purpose machinery, combined with product-related services. With around 72,000 employees and a turnover of around 27 billion euros, it is the region‘s second largest technological branch and includes global leaders like Trumpf, Stihl, Dürr, Schuler, Kärcher or Festo.

Environmental technology

Many of the region‘s businesses in the fields of vehicle, plant and machinery construction recognize the enormous potential for the future in combining commercial and environmental interests. Over 300 firms have joined the region‘s Clean Energy Cluster.

Aerospace

The Baden-Württemberg Aerospace Center (RZBW) at the Stuttgart University campus gives the region the largest and most important aerospace research and training facility in all of Europe today. The research center shares the joint research campus with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and is the central forum of the European aerospace sector.

Creative economy

With over 10,000 businesses and a turnover of 7 billion euros, the creative industry is one of the location‘s defining sectors. The region is a traditional center of publishing, with more than 250 publishing houses, and is known for its innovative advertising agencies, designers and architectural firms as well as film animation and event planning.
