Long before sustainability became a headline topic or a marketing buzzword, the Marriott & Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel had already made it a core part of its identity. For us, responsible operations were never a “trend” but a conviction that shaped daily decisions early on.
This commitment goes back to 2011, when we became one of the first hotels in Germany to sign the German Convention Bureau’s fairpflichtet sustainability codex.
At a time when such initiatives were still evolving, joining fairpflichtet marked a strong, forward‑thinking step. The code set clear expectations for environmentally conscious resource use, transparent communication, and socially responsible behavior, standards we have continued to follow and develop over the years.

Our efforts strengthened further with Marriott International’s global sustainability platform “Serve 360 – Doing Good in Every Direction.” The program supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals and sets ambitious 2025 environmental and social targets across all Marriott hotels. It reinforces what we have practiced for years: operating in a way that benefits both people and the planet.
Green Key: A Recognition of Long‑Term Commitment
A major milestone in our sustainability journey is our Green Key Certification, which we hold for the second year in a row. Even more noteworthy, we are currently the only hotel located directly at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to hold this internationally respected eco‑label.
Green Key is recognized as the leading global standard for environmental responsibility in the tourism and hospitality industry. The certification is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education and is based on strict, transparent criteria covering energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, responsible purchasing, guest communication, and continuous improvement.
What sets Green Key apart is the rigor behind it. Certified hotels must maintain detailed documentation, undergo regular audits, and show measurable progress over time. For our guests, the Green Key symbol offers a simple assurance: staying with us means choosing a hotel that genuinely reduces its environmental footprint.
The program extends across a broad range of tourism businesses, hotels, hostels, campsites, holiday parks, conference centers, restaurants, and attractions that reflect the belief that sustainability must be a shared industry-wide effort.
A Marriott colleague once summarized the impact well: following Green Key criteria not only reduces energy, water, and resource consumption, but also increases awareness among associates and deepens the understanding of how responsible operations benefit the broader community. This is very much in line with what we experience at our own property.

Sustainable Meetings: Connect Responsibly
Sustainability is also deeply integrated into our meetings and events offering. In 2024, Marriott International launched Connect Responsibly, an extension of Serve 360 designed specifically for the meetings sector. It supports planners in creating more environmentally responsible events through:
- Meeting impact reporting
- Access to verified carbon offsets
- Reduced single‑use items
- Food-waste reduction strategies
- Sustainable ingredient sourcing
CO₂ Balancing for Events
To enable planners to take sustainability even further, we also provide CO₂ balancing options. Unavoidable emissions from meetings can be offset through certified climate projects, an easy, transparent way to meet company sustainability goals.
Looking Ahead
Today, sustainability is a topic on nearly every agenda, but for us, it has been part of our DNA long before it was mainstream. As the only Green Key certified hotel at Frankfurt Airport, we are committed to continuing this path: reducing our environmental footprint, educating guests and associates, and steadily improving our operations.
Our goal is simple and consistent: to offer one of the most sustainable and forward‑thinking hospitality experiences at Frankfurt Airport, today, tomorrow, and in the years to come.
