Hamburg is a city that is constantly reinventing itself—open to change, characterized by Hanseatic reliability, and always with an eye on the water. For the MICE industry, this creates a dynamic environment that combines innovation, interaction, and urbanity in a unique way. Two projects exemplify how Hamburg approaches urban development: the already opened Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier and the newly transformed Hamburg Bunker in the St. Pauli district.
Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier: A New Pulse on the City Coast
With the opening of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, HafenCity has gained a vibrant new heart. The project marks a decisive milestone for Hamburg's city coast, which can be experienced almost seamlessly from Blankenese to beyond the Elbe bridges.
On a 419,000 square meter site, 13 striking buildings are growing together to form an urban center that naturally combines living, working, and leisure. With 170 shops, around 40 restaurants and cafés, three hotels, and entertainment highlights such as the Port des Lumières and the LEGO Discovery Center, a diverse location has been created that attracts people from the metropolitan region as well as international guests.
For MICE planners, the district offers modern infrastructure on the waterfront, numerous opportunities for side events and incentives, and an environment that promotes creativity and movement. The mix of architecture, urban greenery, maritime atmosphere, and innovative usage concepts shows how Hamburg understands urban development: open, well thought-out, and with a clear focus on the future.

Hamburg Bunker: A Monument is Transformed
Just a few kilometers away, in the heart of St. Pauli, it becomes clear how consistently Hamburg is rethinking its spaces. The historic high-rise bunker on Heiligengeistfeld—once a symbol of wartime and destruction—is now an international flagship project of urban transformation. Five additional floors and a spectacular green roof garden have turned the concrete colossus into a symbol of sustainable urban development.
Over 20,000 plants have been planted on the 58-meter-high building. The freely accessible city garden offers panoramic views of the entire city and also functions as a climate-active green space. A 560-meter-long “mountain path” leads to the top, offering impressive views even during the ascent.
Today, the bunker is a multi-perspective location: REVERB by Hard Rock Hotel, several dining concepts, cultural and sports areas, and rooms for neighborhood initiatives create an urban ecosystem that brings together creativity, encounters, and history. For events, this location offers an environment that is inspiring, emotional, and deeply rooted in the city.

From Transforming Spaces to Creating the Perfect Conditions: Hamburg as a MICE Destination
The transformation of such places shows how strongly Hamburg is shaped by its attitude: the city is shaping the future – and at the same time creating spaces where people can come together. And this is precisely where the link to Hamburg's qualities as a meeting and congress location comes in. After all, a city that thinks so consistently about urban spaces also offers ideal conditions for events.
Hamburg surprises many visitors – because although the city is a true metropolis, it feels green and open. Numerous parks, waterways, and a tree-lined cityscape characterize urban well-being and contribute to the high quality of life that guests and locals alike appreciate.
Added to this is the proverbial proximity: Hamburg is a city of short distances. Many highlights, shopping opportunities, and cultural sites are within walking distance of each other, especially in the city center. An excellently developed public transport network and services such as the Stadtrad bike-sharing scheme ensure that you can explore almost the entire city quickly and comfortably – and completely car-free.
Hamburg offers the best conditions for the MICE industry: diverse and inspiring locations, an impressive range of hotels, and excellent accessibility. As the host of numerous international events, the city has repeatedly demonstrated that it can master any type of event – not least thanks to the cooperative partnership of all stakeholders, who work together with genuine passion.
