How Sustainability Is Transforming Meetings Made in Germany
GCB Partner Dialogue with North American Event Professionals
Sustainability has become a crucial aspect of how we approach our lives - from our personal choices to global industries. At its core, sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
It involves balancing economic, social, and environmental considerations in ways that foster long-term well-being. As the planet faces unprecedented challenges like climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality, adopting sustainable practices is no longer optional; it is essential for the future of our world. Among the most important and prominent initiatives to provide a shared blueprint and to drive sustainability on a global scale are the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Sustainability in the Event Industry
In the event industry, sustainability plays an increasingly important role. Events, whether large or small, often have significant environmental impacts, from energy consumption to waste generation. The industry is also a key player in the travel and hospitality sectors, which are heavy contributors to carbon emissions. By integrating SDG-based sustainable practices into event planning—such as reducing single-use plastics, using energy-efficient technologies, sourcing local and eco-friendly products, and promoting responsible travel—the event industry can significantly reduce its footprint. Not only does this help protect the environment, but it also aligns with the growing expectations of attendees, sponsors, and stakeholders who value corporate responsibility. Sustainable events foster a culture of mindfulness, innovation, and long-term success.
German destinations and event locations are leading the way in sustainable event practices, creating frameworks that reduce environmental impact while promoting inclusivity. In an exclusive webinar, hosted by the GCB, five of our partners had the opportunity to present and discuss their sustainability initiatives with North American event planners.
- Berlin, for example, has introduced sustainable event guidelines that empower planners to make eco-friendly decisions at every stage of event planning. The city also offers 76 certified sustainable partners to support the process.
- Frankfurt is recognized as the city of short distances. For sustainable transportation, planners can obtain reduced public transport tickets for their participants, resulting in fewer carbon emissions.
- In Hamburg, it is possible to apply for congress funding. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to sustainability across 10 key planning categories, including climate protection measures, venue selection, accommodation, and gastronomy.
- Messe München further exemplifies these efforts by offering e-charging stations, operating entirely on 100% green electricity, and hosting one of the world's largest photovoltaic roof systems. The congress locations also offer very good public transportation connections.
- Hotel brands like H World International are embracing eco-friendly practices by incorporating regional and seasonal products, sustainable supply chains, and responsibly sourced consumer goods. They also prioritize reducing food waste through redistribution efforts.
These cities and hotels are setting a high standard, showcasing how sustainability and inclusivity can be seamlessly integrated into event planning.
