Europe's transport and logistics hub

The most important European logistics hub, the continent's largest automotive market, 9 per cent annual growth in aerospace engineering – just a few of the results Germany has achieved in this area.

Thanks to its central location, excellent infrastructure and state-of-the-art services, Germany is the most important logistics hub in Europe. The home of leading global corporations such as Deutsche Post World Net (no. 1 worldwide), DHL, Schenker and Dachser, it is the European leader with annual revenues of €200 billion and more than 2.65 million employees, and ranks among the best in the world for logistics innovations, technology and services. It is therefore only fitting that the transport ministers from 52 countries, leading industry representatives and researchers come to Germany, or Leipzig to be more precise, every year for the International Transport Forum (ITF), the world's leading conference on transport policy and the transport industry.

The main means of transport in Europe is still the car. Today, the automotive industry generates more revenue than any other in the country, and the German automotive market is the biggest in Europe in terms of production and sales figures (2.9 million new vehicle registrations; 5.5 million new passenger cars manufactured in 2010). With Audi, BMW and MAN (Munich region), Daimler and Porsche (Stuttgart) and Volkswagen (Wolfsburg), Germany is home to many leading car manufacturers as well as an extensive network of innovative automotive suppliers.

The German aerospace industry is also innovative and dynamic, with an annual growth rate of 9 per cent since the mid-1990s. A number of German aerospace companies are working on innovations in the field of engines, lightweight construction and emission reduction. Key global players in the industry have operations in Germany, such as the European Space Agency's satellite control centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt and EADS, the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (Airbus, Astrium) in Bremen.
