What Links Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise and Game of Thrones with Stuttgart?

The Stuttgart region with its 2.6 million inhabitants is known as the home of worldwide market leaders in the automotive and high tech industries and for investing more in R&D than any other German city.

But did you know that the region also offers deep expertise in film and animation media and that Stuttgart-based organizations and professionals have won Emmys and Oscars for their work? http://www.amcrs.de/en/media-showreel

Award-Winning Work

Stuttgart’s Pixomondo is Germany’s leading visual effects firm. Involved in Hollywood movies like “Die Hard 5” with Bruce Willis and “Oblivion”, a Tom Cruise sci-fi flick, the team landed the coveted Academy Award in 2011 for Best Visual Effects for Hugo Cabret, a 3D movie directed by Martin Scorsese. They also won Emmy Awards in 2013 and 2014 for their amazing young dragons and more in the “Game of Thrones”.

Mackevision, based in Stuttgart as well, won an Emmy Award in 2014 for the artificial world it created for the fourth season of “Game of Thrones”.

Cluster & Education Drives Excellence

Behind this high caliber of awards is the long-standing film, visual technology and animation community that makes up the Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart. The cluster promotes know-how and technology transfer, creates synergies, and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration with the goal of establishing the Stuttgart Region as a lasting and internationally acclaimed visual effects and animation hub. The cluster is made up of 17 VFX (visual effects) service providers, animation studios, and two universities -- Stuttgart Media University and the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy.

What’s more, the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) of the University of Stuttgart houses Germany’s fastest supercomputer which helps not only researchers in many disciplines but also animated film producers. The Virtual Dimension Center (VDC) is one of the many reasons why Stuttgart is the German leader in virtual engineering, simulation technology and 3D visualization for the entertainment, automotive, medical industries and many other areas.

Film & Animation Meetings Roll in Stuttgart- FMX Conference & Comic Con Germany

With its rich film and animation vibe, it comes as little surprise that the Stuttgart region hosts a number of meetings and events in these specialized sectors.

One major conference is the FMX Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Transmedia. It takes place annually in Stuttgart and just celebrated its 20th anniversary. FMX lasts four days and provides an impressive line-up of speakers and presentations, welcoming 3,200 attendees from 55 countries. Under the headline "Immersion & Virtual Realities - The Future of Content Viewing and Producing" FMX is a key gathering for interaction and exchange, where Art, Technology and Business meet successfully to discuss the most recent trends in digital entertainment.
