Erlangen has achieved special prominence in the sector of medicine and healthcare. The city is the Medical Valley Centre of the Nuremberg European Metropolitan Region (EMN).

This unique concentration of university research facilities, clinics, medical practice networks and over 180 medical technology enterprises ensures that the region is an internationally leading "medicine cluster".

For the region the significance of medical technology is also demonstrated by the peak cluster competition organised by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Medical Valley EMN has been recognised and promoted by the Ministry as the only leading-edge cluster for medical technology in Germany.
