Extensive Industry Expertise
Leipzig is more popular than ever and growing every year. With its innovative and vibrant art and cultural scene, the city is on everyone's lips. This popularity also has a positive knock-on effect on the congress business. In addition, event planners benefit from the expertise of the city’s service providers and their excellent networking with the university and research institutes, as well as with senior representatives of industry clusters. Leipzig's economic and scientific expertise is centred on the areas of medicine and health care, biotechnology, the automotive industry and logistics, as well as energy and environmental research.
As the second oldest medical school in Germany, the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig has been providing medical training, uninterrupted, for more than 600 years. Numerous other facilities such as the Leipzig Heart Centre, the city-run St. Georg Hospital, founded in 1212, the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI, and the interdisciplinary BIO CITY LEIPZIG all illustrate the high quality of medical care available in the city.
Leipzig’s first-class medical expertise is also clearly demonstrated by its excellent and internationally recognised results in research and therapy. As just one example, the University Hospital Leipzig (UKL) has performed over 3,000 bone marrow transplants. The high standing of medical research and practice in Leipzig and the presence of leading figures, such as the head of the Division of Haematology and Medical Oncology at UKL and President of the Global Network for Blood and Marrow transplantation (WBMT), Prof. Dietger Niederwieser, is reflected in the city’s congress calendar. Thus, Leipzig will, for the second time, be the host of the annual meeting of the German, Austrian and Suisse Societies for Haematoloy and Medical Oncology in 2016, which is expected to attract around 6,000 participants.
In Leipzig’s automotive industry, key achievements have been the establishment of local branches of two of the premium car manufacturers, Porsche and BMW. Since 2002, the Cayenne has been successfully produced at Porsche’s factory in Leipzig, followed a few years later by the Panamera and Macan models. Meanwhile, BMW has been operating its large production plant in Leipzig for over 10 years. Here various models are built, including the two electric cars i3 and i8.
With more than 1,000 participants from 80 countries, the ITF International Transport Forum has been an integral part of Leipzig’s congress calendar for many years. Transport Ministers, scientists, associations and companies meet in Leipzig to discuss the latest industry topics.
Flexible Function Rooms for Meetings, Conventions and Events
With its central location, close to hotels, restaurants, and numerous cultural activities, the reopened KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig meets all the necessary requirements for hosting successful meetings. During the test and pre-opening phase, from September to December 2015, 54 events with over 30,000 participants successfully took place.
The flexible combination of its 15 halls and rooms, offering space for up to 1,200 people, the 800 sqm Expo (Exhibition Area), and the spacious lobbies and lounges, provide the ideal conditions to fulfil any combination of programme requirements.
In addition to medical conferences, this year’s programme also includes association meetings and high-profile events for renowned companies such as Siemens, Volkswagen or Philips. In total more than 100 events are planned.
