“Green Fairs” – Munich meetings are a truly sustainable experience
With the motto of “Green Fairs” Munich walks the talk in making many aspects of meetings a truly sustainable experience.
It starts the moment delegates fly in with the Munich airport opening a new satellite building for Terminal 2 in spring 2016. This state of the art space will include energy efficient people movers, LED lighting, a climate-conscious façade, and energy-saving heating and cooling systems. The goal is for the satellite terminal –which will feature 27 additional aircraft positions- is to create 40 percent lower CO2 emissions than their existing terminals.
Once on the ground, business visitors can stay at hotels like the Zero Energy Hotel which uses solar panels, LED lighting and more to create a carbon-friendly lodging experience and meet at the Messe Munich-- the only conference center in the world to be awarded an “Energy-Efficient Company” certification by TÜV Süd (a global testing, certification, inspection & training organization). The Messe’s green energy approach features an onsite geothermal plant (the only one at an European conference & exhibition center), a vast solar/photovoltaic rooftop system, rainwater reuse, and more. These, along with other sustainable efforts, keeps 8K tons of C02 out of the air annually -- an amount that would take 640K trees to mitigate.
Even one of the world’s biggest and best known festivals in Munich, Oktoberfest serves as an example of how environmental concerns and large public events can successfully mesh. Many steps are taken to reduce waste and water consumption, and use organic and locally sourced F&B and other products.
Finally, delegates and participants with sustainable goals and interests are being drawn to Munich in increasing numbers through conferences & events like Intersolar the world’s leading solar exhibition in 2016, and the 2016 & 2018 IFAT fairs & Green Tec Awards, the top global happenings for water, sewage, waste & raw materials management.
