Accessible Tourism from within: "Tourism for Everyone" in Osnabrück
Large numbers of visitors who attend a variety of events mean that creating a venue that is accessible for people with disabilities is a particular challenge. As a result of a recent renovation that was completed in 2016, OsnabrückHalle is now an accessible venue and barrier-free environment, with wheelchair ramps on the ground floor providing easy access to two lifts in the foyer. The congress centre is also fitted with a guidance system throughout. All measures were jointly developed with Osnabrück Disability Forum and their suitability in everyday situations was tested accordingly.
“In recent years, we have made sure to include the topic of accessible tourism in our communication and talked about it as much as possible. Today, we can clearly see that tourism suppliers are more interested in and also more aware of the issue,“ says Petra Rosenbach, managing director of the region’s tourism organisations. Osnabrück has now also two auditors who have undergone training to certify facilities for the “Travel for All“ project that was initiated in 2014 and is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
