A new bit of old Dresden

dresden market hall
Market hall Dresden
It's quite fitting for Dresden that, around 100 years ago, it built a market hall that was not just practical but also stunningly beautiful – light-filled, with wrought iron railings, elaborately embellished iron staircases and atmospheric fin-de-siècle lamps.
A lavish revamp in 1999 restored Neustadt Market Hall to its old splendour, and now the hall built in 1899 with its romantic arches is the most beautiful market hall in Germany.

Here you will not only find lots of little market stalls with cheerful vendors selling their absolutely fresh produce and many specialities, but you can also try Saxon white and red wines from Schloss Proschwitz estate in the rustic wine cellar. The winery near Meißen is now a leading estate of the eastern German wine-growing region and its wine cultivated on loess and granite has already won several international awards.

You should also try the original Saxon sausage and cheese specialities. From spicy Altmecklenburg Tilsiter to original Saxon wild boar's liver sausage, there are many delicious dishes to enjoy.

Once you have eaten your fill, you can find out at Museum galeriemobil – Kraftfahrzeugen Ostmobil what the sober acronym IFA, Industriefahrzeugbau der DDR, really stood for. Experience a bit of German history, as created by the famous German car and motorbike manufacturers who remained on the eastern side of the iron curtain. The young museum has over forty different multi-track vehicles – all of them unique specimens – and 35 bikes on display. The Trabant is the highlight of this history show; with over 3 million vehicles, this was the world's most widely produced plastic car.

Trabi
And as a great finish to your discovery tour you can look forward to a Trabi Safari:
Be it in a bright red convertible or sky blue saloon – a city tour in this car is great fun. After a brief introduction to the "secrets" of its four-speed manual transmission, you can take over at the helm of your Trabi of choice and chug along at 30 km/h through Dresden. Escorted by a radio guide, the 1.5-hour tour will take you along the banks of the Elbe, through the baroque old town and then into Dresden's New Town. After the trip you will receive your personal "Trabi licence“, and the photo inside will be a sensation for your collection.
