FIFA World Cup™ 2006 – Presentation of Host Cities

In this issue: Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen

Dortmund - city of industrial heritage and change

Dortmund, over 1,100 years old and Germany’s sixth largest city has changed a lot in recent years. Microchips have taken over from coal mining, shopping boulevards have replaced rolling mills and the focus nowadays is on concert halls and not  coking plants. Science, technology and research are Dortmund’s primary future assets.

Dortmund possesses everything necessary to make a city break truly memorable – a fascinating industrial heritage, a broad variety of museums, theatres and cabaret venues, a wide variety and choice of restaurants, quality events at the Westphalia Halls and much more besides.

Dortmund enjoys excellent access whether by air, rail, road or river / canal ship.

FIFA World Cup™ 2006 celebrations

World music, international street theatre and shopping will be the big attractions in Dortmund’s city centre for the FIFA World Cup™ 2006. A colourful spectrum of artists and artistes will endow Dortmund with plenty of Mediterranean life and lots of local flair.

Gelsenkirchen – experience the charm of the Revier

Gelsenkirchen was first mentioned in the year 1147. The discovery of coal in the mid-18th century marked the beginning of the industrial revolution in the Ruhr area.   Coal and steel were Gelsenkirchen’s economic foundation. Gelsenkirchen became one of Europe’s most important coal mining regions. The last coal mine closed, however, in 1998. Gelsenkirchen is now active in the development of modern technologies and solar energy. Lots of people think of football when they hear the word ‘Gelsenkirchen’. For the people of Gelsenkirchen, home of Schalke 04, that's just how it is, especially now that the newly built Arena AufSchalke (also available for seminars, meetings and incentives) is helping redefine the meaning of ‘entertainment’ as applied to football.  Gelsenkirchen’s central location in the Ruhr area is a major plus. 6.4 million people live within a radius of 50 kilometres while four Autobahns guarantee speedy access to the Arena AufSchalke. Fans can easily attend games in Dortmund (30 minutes by car) and Cologne (one hour)

FIFA World Cup™ 2006 celebrations
Join in the FIFA World Cup™ 2006 celebrations with fans from all over the world in Gelsenkirchen from the 8th of June to the 9th of July 2006 at the FIFA Fan Festival in the Glueckauf-Kampfbahn. All games will be shown live on a 60 sqm video wall which backs on to the Arena AufSchalk ‘Nordkurve’. A diverse cultural programme will also be available on all days from start to finish of the FIFA World Cup™.
