Consecration of the Dresden Frauenkirche

When the bells of the consecration service at the Dresden Frauenkirche rang out on 30th October 2005, people from all over the world were following the event. 

The Frauenkirche was completely rebuilt in the years 1994 to 2005. The former open wound was a constant reminder of the horrors of World War II. Countless people supported the reconstruction.  More than 100,000 visitors and 800 journalists were expected to attend the 'Festival of the First Three Days'.

The consecration ceremony itself began at 9:00 a.m. on 30th October 2005. 450 horns from a Saxon trombone ensemble welcomed visitors to the religious service. 

The Frauenkirche's organ was heard for the first time following upon the consecration service.The Dresden Kreuzchor boys’ choir, the Ludwig Güttler brass band and the choir of the Frauenkirche also took part in the musical performance.

The ceremony began with a speech from German Federal President Horst Köhler was broadcasted live on large video screens at Neumarkt and at the Kreuzkirche church.
