Concerted Action for Congress and Trade Fair Destination Munich

The decision of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) to hold their conference from 30th August until 3rd September 2008 in Munich has been the result of increased efforts by Munich City and Munich Trade Fair (Messe Muenchen) in the field of integrated city marketing.

This conference last took place in Munich in 2004 and will further enhance Munich’s reputation as a top-notch congress destination. It is also, according to Managing Director of Messe Muenchen Norbert Bergmann, sound confirmation that the concerted approach taken with this bid was the correct one and one which will lead on to further success.

THE ESC Congress is one of the largest annual medical congresses held worldwide. The Society of Cardiology boasts 45,000 members in Europe. In 2004 some 25,000 members attended the five-day congress in Munich. The ESC 2005 Congress in Vienna generated Euro 70 million. Each participant spends an average of EURO 400 during their stay – high-yield discretionary spend most welcome by local economies, by shops, restaurants and hotels in particular.

In 2004 some 2.18 million congress and meetings guests visited Munich, up 38.7% on the previous year: 52% were business people, while 30% were congress and trade fair visitors only.

The decisive factor in Munich’s international success in attracting such events is the concerted marketing and promotion of the city and what Munich has to offer and Munich’s identification with the congress and trade fair sector as a significant economic motor for both city and region.

Munich’s advantages, however, are not taken for granted in this process. It is considered important to supply congress and trade fair decision-makers with factual and emotionally convincing arguments. Munich’s new image campaign is drawn from this approach and is entitled ‘Munich loves you’.
